EU Reaffirms Support for Iraq’s Economic Reform, Anti-Corruption Efforts and State Control of Weapons
The European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Clemens Semtner, reaffirmed the EU’s support for the Iraqi government’s efforts to advance economic reforms, combat corruption and ensure that weapons remain under state control.
Semtner also announced that the third edition of the Iraqi National Trade and Investment Forum will begin in Baghdad on Wednesday, bringing together dozens of European companies and hundreds of Iraqi businesses.
Speaking at an event hosted by the European Union to celebrate its partnership and friendship with Iraq, Semtner said the EU would remain a reliable partner, recalling its role in supporting Iraq during the war against ISIS and helping millions of displaced people return to their homes.
He added that the EU is ready to strengthen cooperation with Iraq to promote inclusive economic growth, diversify the economy, address climate change and advance modern technologies.
The forum, organized in cooperation with Iraq’s Ministry of Trade, will provide a platform for Iraqi and European companies to explore investment opportunities and strengthen economic ties.
Semtner noted that the new government, led by Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, faces several challenges, stressing the EU’s readiness to work with the administration and support its efforts to reform the economy, fight corruption and consolidate state authority over weapons.
He concluded that Iraq has significant potential to build a prosperous and stable future, calling for stronger cooperation between Iraq and the European Union to achieve these shared objectives.
The event was held at Al-Mansour Theatre in Baghdad, attended by the foreign minister, senior officials, members of parliament, diplomatic representatives and business leaders from Iraq and Europe.
