Turkey Signals Readiness to Support Sudan’s Reconstruction and Expand Infrastructure Investments
Turkey has expressed its willingness to contribute to Sudan’s reconstruction and economic recovery, with a particular focus on construction projects and infrastructure development amid the country’s ongoing crisis.
Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat announced on Monday that he discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation with Sudanese Minister of Industry and Trade Mohasen Ali Yaqoub during a meeting in Istanbul.
The talks took place on the sidelines of the 42nd Ministerial Meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC), held from October 31 to November 3.
Bolat said the discussions covered the latest developments in Sudan and the potential involvement of Turkish construction companies in reconstruction and economic recovery projects as the country moves toward stability and peace.
He also highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in energy, transportation, ports, airports and other infrastructure sectors, while encouraging Turkish companies to invest in Sudan and benefit from its agricultural and mineral resources through mutually beneficial partnerships.
The Turkish minister added that Ankara intends to pursue further initiatives to strengthen trade and investment ties with Khartoum, including organizing events to bring together business leaders and companies from both countries.
The initiative comes as Sudan continues to face the consequences of a conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has triggered a major humanitarian and economic crisis, displaced millions of people and severely damaged infrastructure and essential services.
The United Nations describes Sudan as facing one of the world's largest displacement crises, with approximately 19.5 million people experiencing acute food insecurity.
