Oman Reaffirms Commitment to Safeguarding Strait of Hormuz Navigati

Oman has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while calling on Iran and the United States to settle their outstanding disputes through a lasting political agreement.

Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said the conflict that erupted earlier this year following US-Israeli strikes on Iran had posed a serious challenge to regional security and disrupted shipping and trade through the strategic waterway.

He noted that the disruption had affected energy security, global prices and confidence in the international system, stressing that Oman remains committed to protecting freedom of navigation through the strait in accordance with international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Albusaidi called on all parties to cooperate with Muscat to ensure the continued passage of vessels through the strategic chokepoint while taking into account the interests of countries that rely on the waterway.

He also urged Tehran and Washington to address their outstanding disputes and work toward political understandings capable of providing a sustainable resolution to the crisis.

The Omani foreign minister expressed solidarity with neighboring countries in their efforts to safeguard their security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Regarding Yemen, Albusaidi reiterated Oman’s support for a political settlement that preserves the country’s unity, stability and territorial integrity, urging the parties to reach an agreement that protects Yemen’s sovereignty and its relations with neighboring countries.
