Iraq Registers More Than 8,700 Firearms in One Week Under State Weapons Control Campaign
The head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, Lieutenant General Saad Maan, announced on Saturday that 8,731 firearms were registered over the past week as part of government efforts to regulate weapons and ensure they remain under state control.
In a statement, Maan said the Permanent National Committee for Weapons Regulation and State Control, affiliated with the Interior Ministry’s Police Affairs Agency, completed the registration process in accordance with established legal procedures and regulations.
He noted that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen state authority, enforce the rule of law and implement directives issued by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, under the supervision of Interior Minister Yasser Al-Maliki. He added that growing public participation reflects increased awareness of the importance of supporting security and stability.
Regarding security operations and preventive efforts, the statement reported that authorities have seized a total of 1,191,441 weapons, alongside 11,191,363 rounds of various types of ammunition. The figures also include 201,809 rockets and grenades, as well as 18,180 explosive materials.
The Security Media Cell stressed that security forces will continue working to remove unlicensed weapons from cities and eliminate armed activities outside state authority. It also reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out security duties firmly, urging citizens to cooperate with the relevant authorities in support of national security and stability.
