Iraq Executes Arrest Warrant Against Former Customs Official, Recovers 35 Billion Dinars

Iraqi Member of Parliament Zuhair Shaheed Abdullah Al-Fatlawi announced on Thursday that the Federal Commission of Integrity had executed an arrest warrant against Sinan Mohammed Hanash Mahmoud, the former deputy director of Trebil Customs, as part of the “Where Did You Get This From?” anti-corruption campaign. He noted that the defendant has been convicted since 2023.

Al-Fatlawi stated that the alleged inflated wealth associated with the defendant amounted to IQD 37,882,884,000, in addition to his ownership of real estate. He added that the defendant’s son owns a private hospital, a commercial building and other properties outside Iraq, as well as holding a stake in a commercial company. The son also reportedly has deposits worth IQD 9 billion in Al-Ittihad and Housing banks in Jordan.

In a separate development, the Rusafa Investigative Court, which handles integrity and money laundering cases, announced the recovery of IQD 35 billion in connection with financial and administrative corruption offenses.

According to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council, the competent judge said the recovery resulted from judicial proceedings and detailed investigations conducted by the court. He stressed that legal action would continue against those involved in unlawful practices aimed at generating profits at the expense of public funds.
