Al-Sadiqoun Bloc Calls for Formation of Parliamentary Committee to Review Constitution

The Al-Sadiqoun Parliamentary Bloc has called on the Council of Representatives to establish a committee to review the Iraqi Constitution under Article 142 at the earliest regular parliamentary session, with a publicly announced timetable for its work.

The bloc proposed submitting a working paper to the committee addressing key constitutional issues that have delayed the formation of state institutions. These include the quorum required to elect the president, the definition of the largest parliamentary bloc, and constitutional deadlines, particularly the consequences of failing to meet them.

The bloc stressed that fundamental principles, rights and freedoms must not be subject to political bargaining, emphasizing that any changes affecting them must comply with the strict conditions set out in Article 126 of the Constitution.

It also called for comprehensive dialogue involving all parliamentary blocs and constitutional law experts, stressing that any constitutional amendment lacking broad agreement among Iraqis would not be sustainable.
