Muthanna Council Elects Tawfiq Al-Hassani as New Governor Following Muhannad Al-Atabi’s Resignation

The Muthanna Provincial Council voted on Monday evening to accept Governor Muhannad Al-Atabi’s resignation and elect Tawfiq Al-Hassani as his successor.

The decision followed the council’s approval of Al-Atabi’s resignation, after an official communication raised questions regarding his inclusion in accountability and justice procedures.

Several days earlier, the council had sent a formal letter to Al-Atabi after the legal department of the Supreme National Commission for Accountability and Justice confirmed that he was subject to procedures related to the exclusion of the banned Baath Party.

According to the letter, Al-Atabi’s inclusion in these procedures meant that he no longer met one of the legal requirements for holding the governor’s office, raising concerns over his eligibility to remain in the position.
