Iraq’s Transport Ministry Explores Smart Port Solutions with Huawei

Iraq’s Ministry of Transport held discussions with Chinese technology company Huawei on Thursday to explore the use of advanced technologies in developing the maritime transport sector and accelerating digital transformation at Iraqi ports.

In a statement, the ministry said a delegation, in cooperation with Huawei and Uruk Engineering Services, discussed during a visit to China the potential use of advanced digital solutions and smart systems to modernize Iraq’s transport and port infrastructure.

The visit included participation in Huawei Connect 2026 in Shanghai, as well as a field tour of Tianjin Port to examine its experience in smart port technologies and advanced automation.

The delegation also held meetings with Huawei’s specialized transport teams, focusing on the use of modern technologies to automate operations, improve logistics services and enhance operational efficiency.

At Tianjin Port, the Iraqi delegation reviewed practical applications of smart systems designed to reduce human intervention, accelerate operational procedures and improve overall port management efficiency.

As part of efforts to move the cooperation toward practical implementation, the two sides agreed to have a specialized Huawei technical team visit the Maritime Transport and Ports Directorate to assess existing operations, identify technical and operational requirements, and determine potential areas for deploying modern technological solutions.

The ministry said the visit was carried out in line with directives from Transport Minister Wahab Al-Hassani to expand technology partnerships and draw on international experiences in building a more efficient transport system based on digital technologies and smart solutions.
