Iraq’s Date Production Surges with Exports Exceeding 600,000 Tons Amid Processing Bottlenecks

Iraq is re-establishing its prominent role in the global date market, fueled by a strong harvest season yielding over 850,000 tons annually and export volumes exceeding 600,000 tons. The recovery comes as the country's palm tree population recovers to approximately 22 million, securing self-sufficiency across key varieties—most notably the Zahdi date.

Despite this production rebound led by the Basra Governorate, the sector faces key post-harvest structural constraints. A shortage of modern processing, packaging, and manufacturing facilities compared to pre-2003 levels continues to limit the country's ability to maximize the economic value-add of its date crop in international markets.
