Iraqi Visual Artist Hossam Abdul-Mohsen Dies at 75

Iraq’s artistic community is mourning the death of renowned visual artist and academic Hossam Abdul-Mohsen at the age of 75, following a career spanning more than five decades across art, education and cultural writing.

The Iraqi Artists Syndicate mourned Abdul-Mohsen, who was born in Maysan in 1951 and began taking part in artistic exhibitions and events in the 1970s. His work explored different artistic approaches while maintaining a strong connection to Iraqi heritage, culture and identity.

Beyond painting, Abdul-Mohsen worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines and contributed artwork and stories for children through Iraq’s Dar Thaqafat Al-Atfal. He also had a notable academic and research career in the field of visual arts.

In 2004, he was awarded the title of Professor of Art at the College of Fine Arts, marking a distinguished academic career that complemented his artistic contributions to Iraq’s cultural scene.
