Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan Clarifies Consular Office Dispute That Led to Police Being Called

Iraq’s Ambassador to Jordan, Omar Al-Barzanji, on Thursday provided details of a dispute between an Iraqi woman and several embassy employees inside the consular section, which escalated to the point that police were called to take the necessary legal measures.

In a statement, Al-Barzanji said the incident occurred while the woman was visiting the consular section to complete her paperwork. According to the information available, she allegedly directed offensive remarks at several employees, leading to an escalation of the dispute and the subsequent involvement of the police.

The ambassador said his statement was issued in response to social media posts containing allegations against the embassy and its head. He explained that he had previously refrained from responding to such posts to avoid media disputes that could undermine diplomatic work, but the latest publication made clarification necessary, particularly regarding the source of the complaint and the woman’s family’s connection to the matter.

Al-Barzanji added that he had received a message on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from Dr. Raad Al-Zaidi, the woman’s father, who denied that the ambassador or consul had insulted his family. He also denied that his family was involved in the content circulated on social media.

According to the message, Al-Zaidi stated that he had not authorized anyone to speak or publish statements on behalf of his family, while reserving the right to file a complaint against several embassy employees. He described the incident as a “misunderstanding” between his daughter and a number of consular staff members.

The ambassador noted that the online posts had addressed the conduct of employees involved in the incident, stressing the importance of examining the circumstances as a whole, including the actions of all parties and the events preceding the police being called, rather than relying on a single account.

Al-Barzanji emphasized that treating citizens professionally and respectfully is a fundamental responsibility of diplomatic mission staff. He added that any employee found to have committed misconduct must be held accountable in accordance with the law, while retaining the right to present a defense. He also reaffirmed citizens’ right to submit complaints and grievances through official channels.
