Iraq to Begin Distributing Subsidized Wheat Seeds to Farmers on Monday

Iraqi Agriculture Minister Abdul Rahim Jassim Al-Shammari has directed the launch of wheat seed distribution to farmers across all provinces starting Monday, October 12, as part of preparations for the 2026–2027 winter agricultural season.

According to a ministry statement, the directive was issued during the ninth meeting of the National Seed Council, chaired by Al-Shammari to review the winter agricultural plan, discuss seed supply mechanisms, and assess measures to ensure farmers receive the necessary seeds within the designated planting schedule.

The meeting also addressed a government subsidy covering 70% of seed costs, in accordance with a Council of Ministers decision adopted during its 22nd session. Discussions further focused on streamlining distribution procedures and facilitating access to agricultural inputs ahead of the winter planting season.

The minister praised the government’s approval of the winter agricultural plan, highlighting the expansion of areas covered by the scheme and the provision of support for seeds and pesticides.

The distribution process is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 12, with wheat seeds to be supplied to eligible farmers throughout Iraq.
