Iraq Seeks to Host 18th Arab Ministerial Water Council Session

Iraq’s Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna Al-Tamimi, announced on Monday that Iraq had formally requested to host the upcoming 18th session of the Arab Ministerial Water Council, affirming the ministry’s readiness to organize the event and strengthen joint Arab efforts to achieve water security.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Water Resources, Al-Tamimi headed Iraq’s delegation to the council’s 17th session, held in Egypt with the participation of water ministers, officials and representatives of the League of Arab States.

During the meetings, Al-Tamimi emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation among Arab countries and exchanging expertise to address growing water challenges. He also outlined the key difficulties facing Iraq, including declining water inflows, shrinking water reserves and rising salinity levels.

The minister highlighted government efforts to improve water resource management, reduce water losses, rehabilitate irrigation and drainage networks, and expand the use of modern irrigation technologies to enhance water-use efficiency.

As part of efforts to strengthen regional cooperation, Iraq submitted an official bid to host the council’s 18th session. The Ministry of Water Resources reaffirmed its preparedness to organize the upcoming event and support joint Arab initiatives aimed at achieving water security.

The current session concluded with discussions on draft resolutions and recommendations intended to advance Arab cooperation and address shared water-related challenges.
