Iraq Plans to Raise Gas Investment at Nahr Bin Umar Field to 300 Million Cubic Feet per Day

The Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced plans to increase associated gas utilization at the Nahr Bin Umar field in Basra Province to 300 million standard cubic feet per day through two development phases, each with a capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day.

According to a statement issued by the media office of the Deputy Minister for Gas Affairs, Deputy Minister Izzat Saber Ismail chaired an expanded meeting to review the progress of gas investment projects at the field. The meeting was attended by representatives of the South Gas Company, the Planning and Follow-up Department, and the project operator, Al-Halfaya Gas Company.

The statement said discussions focused on the implementation stages of the associated gas utilization project and development plans aimed at increasing production capacity. The meeting also addressed completion rates, technical and operational requirements, and coordination mechanisms among the relevant parties to overcome challenges and accelerate the integration of new capacities into the gas investment system.

The Deputy Minister stressed the need to expedite the completion of the project's technical and operational requirements and adhere to the established timelines to maximize the utilization of produced gas, reduce gas flaring, and support the energy sector and related industries.

The ministry noted that the contract for gas investment, development, and processing at the Nahr Bin Umar field was awarded to Al-Halfaya Gas Company. The agreement was signed on January 7, 2024, between South Gas Company and Al-Halfaya Gas Company, with an initial capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day and the option to add another 150 million cubic feet per day in a second phase, bringing the planned total capacity to 300 million standard cubic feet per day
