Iraq Launches First Underground Smart Automated Waste Collection System, Spearheaded in Karbala

Iraq’s National Investment Commission (NIC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the Spanish Embassy, and technical partnership with Al-Maher Economic Group and Spanish firm URD, has launched the country’s first automated smart waste collection system. Karbala Governorate has led the implementation, adopting the model across 17 residential zones as part of its new Smart City framework.

The automated system utilizes a network of underground pneumatic tubes that transport waste directly from individual residential units to central transfer stations. By replacing traditional garbage trucks and open bins, the technology significantly mitigates carbon emissions, odor, and environmental pollution. Collected waste is subsequently sorted for recycling or harnessed for energy generation.

Salar Muhammad Amin, Vice President of the NIC, highlighted that the project marks a pivotal shift toward sustainable urban development. He noted that the NIC and the Ministry of Environment are currently establishing regulatory standards to mandate the integration of this technology in new residential projects and investment cities.

Governor of Karbala, Nasif Jassim Al-Khattabi, stated that the initiative directly addresses the city’s massive waste management demands, particularly during major religious events like Arba'een, which can generate over 750,000 tons of waste.
