Iraq and Siemens Energy Sign Cooperation Principles to Develop Power Sector

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity signed cooperation principles with Siemens Energy in Berlin on Tuesday, under the sponsorship of Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi, aimed at continuing joint efforts to develop the country’s power sector and expand generation and transmission projects.

The cooperation framework includes new electricity generation projects, including combined-cycle and thermal power plants, with a focus on high-efficiency technologies and the use of available fuel resources in Iraq. Project locations will also be selected to make use of existing infrastructure, transmission networks and fuel pipelines.

In the transmission sector, the principles cover the supply and installation of new transmission stations in several parts of Iraq based on technical studies and the Ministry of Electricity’s requirements. They also include improving existing transmission facilities, addressing bottlenecks in the national power grid and enhancing the speed of response to emergency outages.

The cooperation further provides for the continuation of maintenance contracts for operating power plants to improve efficiency and increase available generation capacity, alongside exploring project financing mechanisms and implementing training programs to develop the skills of Ministry of Electricity personnel across various fields.
