Iran Launches “Car-Free Day” Initiative at Energy Ministry Amid Fuel Shortages

Iran’s Ministry of Energy has launched a “Car-Free Day” initiative within the ministry as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption amid growing energy supply pressures.

Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi said the ministry would encourage employees to use alternative transportation instead of private cars, stressing that the government aims to lead energy-saving efforts through its own institutions.

The initiative follows President Masoud Pezeshkian’s directive to introduce a weekly car-free day across government institutions, alongside efforts to expand public transportation and increase hybrid vehicle production.

Iran is facing mounting energy pressures as gas production declines and electricity demand rises, contributing to supply shortages and recurring power disruptions in several areas.
