Historic Milestone: Peshmerga Ministry Announces Full Unification of Units 70 and 80
The Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs in the Kurdistan Region announced the completion of the structural unification of Units 70 and 80, placing them under a single unified command structure strictly governed by the ministry—a move hailed as a historic institutional reform.
In an official statement, the ministry noted that the process followed extensive joint efforts to overcome organizational obstacles, restructuring forces into brigades, divisions, and regional commands operating under modern military standards.
The ministry credited the top leadership of the Kurdistan Region as well as the U.S.-led International Coalition for their vital support under signed memorandums of understanding. This step brings an end to the historical division between Unit 80 (affiliated with the KDP) and Unit 70 (affiliated with the PUK), fulfilling key international reform initiatives pushed since 2014 to build a professional, centralized military force.
