Headline: Wasit Anti-Narcotics Directorate Seizes 12 Kilograms of Opium, Arrests Asian Suspect

Iraq’s Wasit Anti-Narcotics Directorate announced on Thursday the seizure of 12 kilograms of opium and the arrest of an Asian national suspected of possessing the illegal shipment.

The directorate said the operation followed intelligence efforts that penetrated a drug-smuggling network operating in a neighboring country. Security personnel subsequently tracked the shipment and monitored the movements of one of the network’s members until he entered Iraqi territory.

According to the statement, officers set up an ambush that resulted in the suspect’s arrest and the confiscation of the narcotics before the shipment could reach its intended destination. The operation was part of ongoing efforts to prevent the smuggling and distribution of illegal drugs in Iraq
