Guterres Calls for De-escalation and Freedom of Global Navigation

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday stressed the importance of establishing a multilateral international system based on balance and fair representation, while calling for greater cooperation and stability among nations.

Speaking at the opening of the UN General Assembly, Guterres said international competition does not necessarily have to lead to confrontation, but can instead contribute positively to stability and cooperation.

He emphasized that military power alone cannot secure peace, just as economic strength by itself cannot guarantee stability, highlighting the need for a balanced approach based on dialogue and cooperation.

The UN chief also called on world leaders to work toward reducing tensions and ensuring freedom of navigation around the world.
