Google escalates dispute with EU over digital market rules

Google has stepped up its legal challenge against European Union regulators over the scope of the Digital Markets Act, arguing that some measures intended to promote greater competition could come at the expense of user privacy and security.

The new requirements are scheduled to take effect next year. Google filed its challenges on Monday with the General Court in Luxembourg, the European Union’s second-highest court.

Oliver Bethell, Google’s senior director of competition, said the company was appealing decisions that could require it to share users’ private search histories without adequate anonymisation safeguards, while also weakening key security protections on Android.
