Former MP Talal Al-Zobaie Sentenced to 7 Years Over Illicit Enrichment; Assets Confiscated

Iraq’s Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has sentenced former MP Talal Al-Zobaie to seven years in prison following his conviction on charges of illicit enrichment and unexplained wealth accumulation, pursuant to Law No. 30 of 2011 (as amended).

The court ordered Al-Zobaie to repay IQD 5.55 billion and USD 128.96 million in illicit gains, alongside an equal financial fine. His imprisonment will continue beyond the initial term until all imposed funds and fines are fully paid.

The verdict included the confiscation of real estate in Baghdad (Al-Dawoodi and Karradat Maryam) and an apartment in Amman, Jordan. Authorities also seized a vehicle fleet (a Mercedes, a GMC, and four Toyota Land Cruisers, including an armored model), cash in various currencies, 10 luxury watches, 17 prayer beads, and gold jewelry. A provisional freeze was placed on the assets of Al-Zobaie and his family after he failed to substantiate the legitimate source of his wealth or disclose it in financial asset declarations.
