Flash Floods Hit Istanbul, Disrupting Traffic as 2,722 People Are Rescued

Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across Istanbul, Türkiye, inundating streets, homes and tunnels and bringing traffic in many parts of the city to an almost complete standstill.

According to Anadolu Agency, authorities suspended in-person classes at all public and private educational institutions across Istanbul as a precautionary measure to protect residents and address the impact of severe weather conditions.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül urged residents to avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary, following the heavy downpours and flooding that swept through the city.

Gül said emergency and rescue teams had evacuated 2,722 people who were trapped by floodwaters and transported them to safe areas, using both vehicles and boats. He added that limited rescue operations were still underway at 14 locations.

The governor also confirmed that adverse weather conditions had disrupted air traffic, prompting authorities to reroute 51 flights and cancel another 19.

Emergency measures remain in place as authorities continue responding to the effects of the flooding and work to ensure public safety.
