Counter-Terrorism Regiment Command Reshuffled in Kirkuk After Altun Kupri Incident

An Iraqi security source in Kirkuk said Sunday evening that changes had been made to the command of the province’s Counter-Terrorism Regiment following an incident in Altun Kupri that left two civilians dead during a security operation.

The source said the regiment’s commander, a lieutenant colonel, was removed from his position only about a week after assuming the post. Colonel (A.S.), the regiment’s former commander, was subsequently reinstated.

The changes came as part of measures taken following the incident, while an investigation committee formed by the Prime Minister continues its work to establish the circumstances of the deaths and determine any negligence or responsibility.

According to information circulating about the investigation, a police officer and five personnel could be held responsible for alleged shortcomings. However, the information has not been officially announced.

The source stressed that final decisions regarding those responsible will be made after the committee completes its investigation and formally issues its findings.
