Basra and Karbala Prepare 195,000 Residential Plots Under Free "Watan" Housing Initiative
Governors of Basra and Karbala announced the completion of preparations for 195,000 residential land plots to be distributed free of charge under the "Watan" housing initiative launched by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi to address the nation's housing shortage.
Basra Governor Asad Al-Eidani stated that the province finalized mapping and documentation for 135,000 plots, which were submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office, confirming that eligibility extends to any citizen without prior real estate ownership. Meanwhile, Karbala Governor Nasif Jassim confirmed that 60,000 plots are ready for allocation, highlighting the program’s role in alleviating housing pressures and generating employment opportunities.
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the plots will be distributed entirely free to eligible families lacking housing, with an online registration portal set to launch in October. This phase contributes to an initial milestone of over 216,000 prepared plots across 15 governorates, supporting a broader national target of one million residential land units.
