Bangkok Declared Disaster Zone as Heavy Rains Trigger Widespread Flooding

Authorities in Thailand’s capital Bangkok declared the city a disaster zone on Saturday after more than a day of heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and submerged several roads, with further severe weather expected in the coming days.

Parts of Bangkok recorded more than 24 hours of continuous rain, with rainfall exceeding 150 millimeters in some areas. The Meteorological Department warned of thunderstorms and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at the beginning of the week.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the situation posed a threat to residents’ lives and could also cause damage to both public and private property.

As a precautionary measure, the government issued an emergency warning to residents living near canals, urging them to move their belongings to higher ground in anticipation of rising water levels.

Videos shared on social media showed vehicles partially submerged by floodwaters, while emergency teams were seen assisting residents and responding to the flooding across affected areas.
