Allawi Proposes National Conference to Address Iraq’s Political Crises

The leader of the National Coalition, Iyad Allawi, on Saturday called for an expanded national conference bringing together political, civil, and social forces to address Iraq’s ongoing challenges and strengthen stability, national unity, and sovereignty.

According to a statement issued by the coalition, Allawi chaired an expanded meeting attended by coalition leaders and members, during which participants reviewed political developments, current challenges, and ways to rectify the country’s political process.

The statement said Allawi’s initiative includes the formation of a national dialogue body, with the participation of Iraqi figures and representatives from the United Nations and the Arab League. It also calls for reviewing constitutional provisions and the electoral system, strengthening the independence of Iraq’s decision-making, and establishing balanced relations with regional and international countries.

The initiative further emphasizes the need to end political and partisan power-sharing, combat corruption, safeguard public funds, and place qualified personnel in charge of state institutions. It also calls for placing all weapons under state control and unifying military and security leadership and decision-making within a clear legal framework.

Allawi said the initiative is based on a shared national responsibility and seeks to establish a state founded on citizenship, institutions, and the rule of law, while placing Iraq’s interests and those of its people above partisan, factional, and personal interests.
